SSEH3355 Biomechanical Principles [UG]

THE BIOMECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF MOVEMENT IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Content This unit provides a study of current biomechanics methodology used in the analysis of human motion, with particular focus on video-based methods for analysis of sporting and clinical populations. Theoretical principles and methodologies underpinning dynamometry also comprises a major component of the unit. Students are able to descibe the various neuromuscular mechanisms involved in the production and control of movement, including topics such as muscle-tendon organisation and design, muscle geometry and the joint system. The unit includes lectures, laboratories and a major project.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) collect and analyse two-dimensional video and appreciate the requirements for three-dimensional opto-reflective data collection; (2) collect and analyse force platform, dynamometry and electromyography (EMG) data; (3) appreciate how segments move and the role of external and internal forces in loading; (4) prepare a written report that integrates literature with data collected using the above technical procedures to the extent that a discussion of the collected data with reference to the literature is included—this report must also be presented to the class for critical evaluation; and (5) develop generic research and communication skills.
Assessment This comprises a two-hour examination (35 per cent), a major written assignment (40 per cent) and a presentation (25 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
