SCIE8367 Management Decision Tools [PG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 2 (see Timetable)
Outcomes Students are able to integrate the various forms of knowledge acquired previously in their degree into a systematic (mathematical) form that allows for the identification of optimal (or improved) management solutions; identify solutions to a management problem using appropriate decisions-support software or simulation techniques; incorporate risk into the specification of the problem and identify appropriate solutions; and communicate clearly the results from their analysis, in a manner which highlights strengths and weaknesses of their analysis.
Content This unit begins with an overview of why integration of interdisciplinary knowledge is required for improved natural resource management (NRM) management outcomes. It then discusses the required elements of a decision tool, including specification of management objectives and methods for dealing with multiple objectives; identification of management options and variables that describe the state of the system; development of the conceptual model of the dynamics of the system; identifying constraints on actions; quantifying uncertainty of parameters and relationships; and finding solutions to the problem.

The unit outlines the process of management strategy evaluation, which is emerging as a key aspect of improved NRM management, especially in areas that include potential trade-offs between extractive and conservation objectives.
Assessment This comprises the assessment of the corresponding Level 3 unit (50 per cent) and an additional assignment (50 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
