| Outcomes: This unit exposes students to a research project involving nanotechnology. Students gain an appreciation for the tasks involving in formulating a research project, performing research and communicating the results. They also learn how to gather information on an application of nanotechnology in industry and present the findings of this case study to a general audience. |
| |
Content: This unit is taken over two successive semesters and parts 1 and 2 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit. Students can commence the unit in either semester 1 or semester 2.
The unit comprises a case study on an application of nanotechnology currently employed by industry and a major laboratory research project involving nanotechnology performed under the supervision of a UWA scientist or engineer. |
| |
Assessment: Students write a case study (25 per cent), a research progress report (10 per cent), and a mini-thesis on their research project (40 per cent) and also present a seminar on their research project (25 per cent). The seminar also include an oral defence of the results of the research project.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
