Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 1, offshore teaching period (see Timetable)
Old unit code 139.225
Outcomes Students gain an understanding of the theory and practice of molecular biology, acquiring laboratory skills necessary for the practice of routine molecular biological techniques.
Content This unit is for students in the biological sciences and chemistry; it is a prerequisite for SCIE3325 Molecular Biology. It is taught jointly by the discipline of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the discipline of Microbiology and Immunology. The unit builds on introductory material presented in SCIE1106 Molecular Biology of the Cell. It features the regulation of gene activity in prokaryotes and eukaryotes and recombinant DNA technology including PCR, site-directed mutagenesis and cloning, plus applications in biotechnology and bioengineering. An introduction to bioinformatics is also provided.
Assessment This comprises a mid-semester examination (15 per cent), final examination (50 per cent) and laboratory work (35 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
