REGD8418 Community Natural Resource Management [PG]

Outcomes Students develop the ability to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of community participation in natural resource management in Australia; an understanding of the interaction between government and community in natural resource management; an understanding of the complexities of integrating environmental, sociocultural and economic perspectives in natural resource management at the local and regional scale; an understanding of how Indigenous Australians view 'country' and 'caring for country'; knowledge of some approaches to Indigenous participation in 'mainstream' natural resource management; and the ability to communicate comprehension of community natural resource management by developing quality arguments.
Content This unit explores how natural resource management works at the local and regional scale including the role of Indigenous natural resource management. It assesses the characteristics of successful community natural resource management and examines some of the limitations. It explores the concept of sustainable regional development and the complexity of integrating environmental perspectives with economic, social and cultural perspectives at a local scale.
Assessment This comprises a 1000-word assignment (15 per cent), a 2500-word essay (40 per cent), a portfolio of research tasks (35 per cent) and online discussions and tutorials (10 per cent).
