Content This unit is concerned with the design and conduct of surveys for obtaining information about health in the population including health-related behaviour, experiences, attitudes and opinions. Areas covered include conceptualisation of the research problem, survey design and planning, development of data-gathering instruments, field-work procedures and the preparation of data for analysis. Aspects of sampling theory and sample selection are covered, as well as measurement theory, scaling techniques and sources of error in surveys. The unit addresses the particular characteristics of various methods of data collection for health surveys including face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews and self-administered questionnaires. Ethical issues and practice in the conduct of survey research are also discussed. Critical analysis of relevant literature is an important aspect of the unit.
