Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 1, offshore teaching period
Old unit code 140.301
Outcomes Students gain a detailed knowledge of various statistical analyses that can accommodate more than one independent variable. More specifically, students identify which statistical analyses are appropriate to test particular hypotheses, as well as interpret and report the results of those various statistical analyses. Working knowledge of SPSS is expected.
Content This unit provides an overview of the main techniques of experimental psychology including the design of experiments, the measurement of variables and the logic of hypothesis testing and the statistical analysis of data in behavioural sciences. The emphasis for the unit is a mix of theory and practice, and the expectation is that students successfully completing the unit are able to appropriately design research and select, perform and interpret statistical analyses.
Assessment This comprises an assignment, a laboratory examination and a two-hour end-of-semester examination. The assignment assesses students’ ability to perform analysis in SPSS and present their findings in APA format. The laboratory examination assesses students’ ability to select and perform appropriate data analysis in SPSS under examination conditions. The end-of-semester examination assesses the understanding of statistical techniques and the relations and distinctions between various statistical analyses and concepts.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
