| Outcomes |
Students understand and apply the research methods of psychology to generate new psychological knowledge and to understand when measurement issues constrain research design and data analysis. They are able to apply rational thought and a scientific approach to solving psychological problems and develop basic skills in data analysis and in the use of computers as a tool for this purpose. They use mathematics and statistics appropriate to psychology and also develop a familiarity with scientific approaches within psychology and particularly in experimental psychology. They develop critical thinking skills of reasoned and rational argument in the context of a scientific discipline. |
| Content |
This unit introduces a range of psychological research techniques and illustrates their strengths and weaknesses through the discussion of psychological research in areas including cognition, social and developmental psychology. Students are instructed in the basic principles of research design and inferential decision making. |
| Assessment |
Students demonstrate achievement of the outcomes in a variety of assessment methods which may include an examination, a laboratory report and completion of specific laboratory exercises.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
