IMMUNOLOGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASE
| Credit | 12 points | ||

| Old unit code | 950.302 | ||
| Outcomes | Students gain an understanding of interaction between infectious agents and the immune system. Students also gain an insight into the epidemiology of specific infectious agents with respect to their mode of transmission and their ecology. The laboratory work complements the lectures and students gain valuable experience in advanced microbiological techniques. Students also develop self-directed learning and written, computer and verbal skills. Students learn how to evaluate their results and communicate them to others. This unit enables students to understand the nature of infection and prepare themselves for a career in microbiology. This experience also enables students to determine their interest in proceeding to honours level. | ||
| Content | This unit covers immunology, virology, parasitology and bacteriology with respect to the interaction between infectious agents and their host. Emphasis is placed on the integrity of the host immune system and strategies used by infectious agents to evade the immune system. The epidemiology of important and emerging infectious agents is also examined. The lectures are accompanied by a laboratory component which introduces students to advanced molecular, immunological, bacteriological and virological techniques. | ||
| Assessment | This comprises a final examination (50 per cent), continuous assessment (30 per cent) and a laboratory assessment (20 per cent). Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. | ||
