| Outcomes |
Students gain an understanding of how micro-organisms (especially bacteria and viruses) cause disease. In the laboratory sessions students gain a deeper understanding of the activities of bacteria and viruses, and master laboratory skills for work in a professional microbiology laboratory. |
| Content |
This unit assumes completion of MICR2204 Introductory Microbiology. The unit introduces the immune response, and the nature of viral and bacterial infections, and microbial genetics. Disorders of the immune system, laboratory tests for infection and vaccines in current use are discussed. In the laboratory sessions students gain a deeper understanding of the activities of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and master laboratory skills for work in a professional microbiology laboratory. The unit is one of the prerequisites for a major in Microbiology. |
| Assessment |
This comprises a final theory examination (50 per cent), continuous assessment on the lecture component of the unit (15 per cent) and continuous assessment of the practical component (35 per cent).
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
