| Outcomes |
Students are able to (1) understand and apply the general principles relating to the formation, contents and termination of the common law contract of employment; (2) understand the impact of the Australian Constitution on workplace law in Australia; and (3) understand and apply the legal principles relating to industrial law and associated topics such as occupational health and safety, workers' compensation and equal opportunity in employment. |
| Content |
This unit covers the law relating to workplace relations in Australia, both state and federal. Topics include the common law contract of employment; awards and workplace agreements; the constitutional framework; the role of unions and industrial action; the termination of employment; occupational health and safety law; workers' compensation law; and equal opportunity in employment law. |
| Assessment |
Students are required to participate in tutorials, complete a mid-semester assignment and undertake a final examination.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |

| Incompatibility: (1) Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws are not permitted to enrol in this unit; (2) A student who completes this unit in the Bachelor of Economics or the Bachelor of Commerce is not permitted to take LAWS3360 Employment Law or LAWS3321 Workplace Relations Law in the Bachelor of Laws. |
