| Outcomes | Students are able to (1) demonstrate a basic understanding of principles of law applicable to 'outside the norm' transactions where special duties may be owed, as well as basic concepts of property law, and business and personal finance; (2) within those areas, analyse the factual matrix of a dispute and state the legal issues that arise; (3) cite the legal principles that are needed to resolve the legal issues as well as the statutory and case authorities that are the source of those principles; and (4) apply the facts to the principles and reach a reasoned conclusion as to the outcome of the dispute. | |||
| Content | This unit follows on from LAWS1104 Introduction to Law and is for students who are planning a career in accountancy, business management, marketing, banking, finance, public service or in related professional and business endeavours. The unit begins with a look at fiduciary relationships and the law of agency. It then reviews alternative legal structures used for the operation of businesses. Finally, students are introduced to certain aspects of business finance and bankruptcy law. | |||
| Assessment | This comprises tutorials (20 per cent), a take-home assignment (25 per cent) and a final examination (55 per cent). Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. | |||
