Outcomes Students acquire an overview of major developments in the dramatic literature of the Italian people, from late medieval times to the twentieth century; and are able to analyse selected performance texts, and associated sources, in order to gain an understanding of notable sociohistorical, linguistic and cultural trends and changes reflected by these texts in the context of the prevailing conditions in which they were produced.
Content This unit is offered according to staff availability. The unit begins with an overview of the birth of Italian theatre from the Middle Ages to the Italian renaissance. It includes a brief survey of the Commedia dell'Arte and a study of selected Italian classics, from the time of Machiavelli to the present.
Assessment Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
