ITAL2223 The World of Dante [UG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 1
Old unit code 110.223
Content This is principally a cultural acquisition unit intended to introduce students to the rich texture of medieval Italy, its political and social structures and main aspects of the secular and religious life as documented by the Divine Comedy of the Florentine poet, philosopher and statesman Dante Alighieri between the late 1200s and the first decades of the 1300s. Students engage with this major text of Italian literature, concentrating on the Inferno, both in its original form and also through a contemporary English translation. Assimilation of the primary source material is a key feature of this unit and students are expected to react and think critically on a variety of moral, literary, philosophical and cultural issues that shaped Dante's thought and his very world and which, in turn, the poet reflected in his own creative and original way through the various narrative techniques and stylistic and literary devices adopted by him as an integral part of his Christian epic. Primary sources in English translation are made available to students.
Assessment Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
