IMED8801 Principles of Teaching and Learning [PG]

Availability Semester 1 (see Timetable)
Outcomes Students are able to (1) discuss and apply adult learning educational principles; (2) discuss learning theories; (3) demonstrate knowledge of strategies to facilitate clinical teaching and learning; (4) compare and contrast different teaching approaches and learning styles; (5) identify barriers and facilitators to learning in a clinical context; and (6) demonstrate critical self-reflection skills as both a teacher and learner.
Content In this unit students explore the theoretical foundations of learning and teaching and discuss critically their roles as health professional teachers. They are assessed and given feedback on their teaching through performance and compare and contrast different teaching approaches. Students learn about curriculum development and, through analysis of successful innovations, gather examples relevant for their own health profession practice.
Assessment There are no formal examinations for this unit. Assessment is based on an assignment (60 per cent), a presentation (20 per cent) and peer review (20 per cent).
