| Outcomes |
Students gain an increased level of competency in all four macroskills—listening to as well as speaking German, and reading and writing German corresponding to levels B2/C1 of the Joint European Framework (Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen). In addition, students develop an increased awareness of intercultural understandings, language learning and communication strategies. |
| Content |
Through lectures and seminar-style classes, and study as well as discussion of selected texts, students are introduced to central issues in German literature and society from the baroque until the beginning of the twentieth century, and develop an appreciation for the intricacies of the German language used in older texts. The lecture is accompanied by two seminars. The cultural studies seminar focuses on further reading, understanding and discussion of German history, literature and culture. The language seminar focuses on academic reading and essay writing skills as well as advanced communication skills in German.
In addition to the compulsory weekly contact hours, conversation classes (by native and near-native speakers) are also offered to students as a unique opportunity for extra practice.

| Assessment |
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
