Students gain an increased level of competency in all four macroskills—listening to as well as speaking German, and reading and writing German corresponding to level B1 of the Joint European Framework (Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen). In addition, students develop an increased awareness of intercultural understandings and language learning and communication strategies. |
| Content |
This unit is designed for students who have completed GRMN2203 German Intermediate I. It uses the discussion and analysis of recent German cultural productions such as advertisement, films, literature and music as the basis for language acquisition. It is taught in a two-hour language seminar, a one-hour lecture plus one tutorial. Class discussion focuses mainly on the examination of contemporary film as well as visual art and culture, their links to current sociopolitical issues and connections to wider cultural phenomena. This part of the unit covers a broad range of theoretical issues including questions of gender, representation and difference (especially with regard to 'Westalgie' and 'Patriotismus'). The textbook-based grammar/language component fosters and deepens the knowledge of contemporary German language usage and reinforces grammatical structures utilising materials from the cultural studies component.
In addition to the compulsory weekly contact hours, conversation classes (by native and near-native speakers) are also offered to students as a unique opportunity for extra practice.

| Assessment |
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
