Students gain an increased level of competency in all four macroskills—listening to as well as speaking German, and reading and writing German corresponding to level B2 of the Joint European Framework (Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen). In addition, students develop an increased awareness of intercultural understandings, language learning and communication strategies. |
| Content |
This unit is designed for students who have completed GRMN1105 German Advanced I. It uses the discussion and analysis of twentieth-century German cultural productions such as advertisement, film, literature and music as the basis for language acquisition. It is taught in a one-hour language seminar, a one-hour lecture and a tutorial. Week 13 is reserved for the in-class examination. Utilising methods from visual history as well as German cultural studies—and by focusing on the analysis of historical images and the study as well as discussion of selected texts—students are introduced to central issues in twentieth-century German-speaking societies (with a particular focus on 1961 to 1990).
In addition to the compulsory weekly contact hours, conversation classes (by native and near-native speakers) are also offered to students as a unique opportunity for extra practice.
While the unit focuses on the twentieth century, the upper-level German cultural studies units (GRMN2207 German Advanced III and GRMN2208 German Advanced IV) treat the periods from baroque through to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The unit leads to GRMN2207 German Advanced III or GRMN2209 German Advanced Language I. |
| Assessment |
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
