GRMN1101 German Beginners I [UG]

Outcomes Students (1) have a basic German vocabulary relating to everyday communication; (2) know a variety of learning strategies relevant in the areas of syntax, semantics and phonetics; (3) are able to use basic German grammatical structures correctly in simple oral and written communication; (4) are able to communicate in basic German in everyday situations, i.e. talking about self, meeting people, at home, shopping; (5) are familiar with basic sociolinguistic conventions in German; (6) have a basic knowledge of German culture and society; and (7) are able to read simple German texts relating to everyday situations.
Content This unit introduces students to German language and culture and consists of four hours of language classes per week. It provides students with the opportunity to practice both spoken and written language skills in everyday situations. The unit is based on a textbook. There is also a CD to help students with German phonetics. The progression of grammar topics is gradual and students are introduced to German culture and society through authentic texts and audiovisual materials. This unit leads to GRMN1102 German Beginners II.
Assessment Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.

Unit Rules
Prerequisites: This unit is designed for students who have no previous knowledge of German or only a slight knowledge of German. Students who have studied German to TEE level or its equivalent cannot be admitted and should consult the unit co-ordinator for information regarding the appropriate unit for enrolment. Students with some knowledge of the language should consult the Convenor of German.
