Outcomes Students are able to (1) understand the objectives of school psychology as a student support service in schools, including the range of service provision as it currently exists; (2) demonstrate competency in assessment and analysis of assessment information; (3) demonstrate competency in basic counselling skills; (4) demonstrate competency in oral and written communication, including interviewing, report writing, appraisal of information derived from a variety of sources, and preparation and presentation of materials for groups appropriate for context and audience; (5) demonstrate an awareness of the role of the school psychologist in pastoral care and student management on a whole-of-school basis; (6) demonstrate an awareness of appropriate aspects of current Department of Education and Training (DET) policies, initiatives and strategic directions; (7) demonstrate familiarity with the ethical and professional requirements of the Psychologists Registration Board of WA, the APS and DET; (8) apply appropriate professional ethical considerations to situations they are likely to encounter in the field; and (9) develop an awareness of the responsibilities that they face as employees of DET or the non-government education system.
Content This unit develops skills in psychological and educational assessment, interviewing and counselling. In addition, ethical and professional issues are introduced and discussed.
Assessment Students demonstrate their ability to carry out an assessment using the WISC-IV and their ability to employ counselling techniques.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a student enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Education who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.

Prerequisites: enrolment in the Graduate Diploma in Education
Advisable prior study: a Bachelor of Psychology degree
