Students develop an understanding of the educational, behavioural, social and emotional needs of exceptional children and adolescents and are able to program appropriately to meet their educational needs; are aware of the learning needs associated with various categories of exceptionality; are able to utilise the Foundation Outcome Statements in programming for students with exceptional needs; are aware of the range of support structures and support personnel available to assist teachers to meet the educational needs of students with exceptional needs; and are able to demonstrate an awareness of appropriate aspects of current Department of Education and Training policies, initiatives and strategic directions with regard to exceptional students. |
| Content |
This unit provides students with an introduction to the characteristics of children and adolescents with exceptional needs. The range of disabilities and disorders encountered by teachers in special and mainstream settings is covered throughout the unit. Students develop an understanding of the educational, behavioural, social and emotional needs of children and adolescents with a disability and are able to program for their needs. Policy and practice in inclusive education are also covered. |
| Assessment |
This includes the preparation of a 12-hour teaching program and a classroom presentation on a topic of relevance to special education.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student or a student enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Education who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
