EDUC8461 Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Curriculum I [PG, UG]

Outcomes Students are able to choose teaching approaches that are appropriate for specific groups of learners and for the subject matter taught in their LOTE; write a teaching program; write a lesson plan; design an assessment schedule to monitor their students' learning; and design their own materials to support learning in their LOTE.
Content This unit gives an overview of Languages Other Than English (LOTE) in the lower secondary school curriculum; principles of, and developments in, language teaching and learning; the development of micro and macro skills in listening and speaking; and the use of teaching aids, text evaluation, student assessment, lesson planning and teaching strategies.
Assessment This includes the preparation of a sequence of lesson plans and a program for six weeks of teaching.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student or a student enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Education who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.

Unit Rules
Prerequisites: enrolment in a Bachelor of Education combined course or the Graduate Diploma in Education; for students in the Bachelor of Education combined course: EDUC2202 Constructions of Teachers' Work
Advisable prior study: at least two Level 1 and two Level 2 units in one of the language subjects taught in schools. These subjects include Japanese, French, German, Indonesian and Italian.
Contact hourslectures/seminars: 2 x 1.5 hrs per week for 10 weeks
