Students are able to develop a personal rationale for teaching and learning in the subject English which can be located within theoretical frameworks; demonstrate understandings of key concepts associated with teaching, learning and assessment of English curriculum; demonstrate a repertoire of teaching and learning strategies relevant to the secondary English curriculum; demonstrate a detailed understanding of current Western Australian English Curriculum structures and policy relevant to lower secondary English; develop teaching and learning materials for lower secondary English; and develop skills of classroom-based enquiry, which help promote continual development as a reflective practitioner. |
| Content |
This unit is designed for pre-service teachers who plan to teach secondary school English in Years 8 to 10 only. It provides a theoretical framework for teaching, learning and assessment. Familiarity with the Curriculum Framework is developed. Through active participation in workshops, pre-service teachers develop an understanding of strategies for effective teaching and learning, gain skills for planning and programming, learn about instructional materials and resources, and formulate personal positions on issues relevant to English teaching. |
| Assessment |
There are two tasks requiring students to demonstrate an understanding of current English Curriculum for lower secondary school through the creation of teaching and learning programs and materials. A further percentage of the assessment is allocated for professional conduct.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student or a student enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Education who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
