| Outcomes |
Students acquire a better understanding of their own linguistic knowledge and skills, and can transfer and use this knowledge in a variety of teaching situations. They are in a better position to ensure the unambiguous delivery of their course material, understand linguistic and sociolinguistic differences among students and assist students in their language development. |
| Content |
This unit is an introduction to linguistics and applied linguistics, with an emphasis on applications to educational contexts, and is designed primarily for language teachers [Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Languages Other Than English (LOTE)]. Students learn the fundamental principles of phonology, grammar, semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics as a prerequisite to applying them in their field of language learning. The unit is also recommended for teachers of any subject who have a strong interest in language and a desire to understand the use of language in the classroom. |
| Assessment |
This includes two linguistic problems (50 per cent each) with a discussion of their relevance to a teaching situation.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a Graduate Diploma in Education student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
