Outcomes Students acquire a better understanding of their own linguistic knowledge and skills, and can transfer and use this knowledge in a variety of teaching situations. They are in a better position to ensure the unambiguous delivery of their course material, understand linguistic and sociolinguistic differences among students and assist students in their language development.
Content This unit is an introduction to linguistics and applied linguistics, with an emphasis on applications to educational contexts, and is designed primarily for language teachers [Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Languages Other Than English (LOTE)]. Students learn the fundamental principles of phonology, grammar, semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics as a prerequisite to applying them in their field of language learning. The unit is also recommended for teachers of any subject who have a strong interest in language and a desire to understand the use of language in the classroom.
Assessment This includes two linguistic problems (50 per cent each) with a discussion of their relevance to a teaching situation.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a Graduate Diploma in Education student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
