Outcomes The process of writing a minor dissertation significantly strengthens the student's skills in the organisation of a scientific document; computer-based literature search; evaluation of the relevance and value of published work; analysis and presentation of results; and scientific writing. These are generic skills that have a high level of relevance to a technical or scientific career.
Content Parts 1 and 2 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit.

The unit comprises a research project on an approved topic to be completed in the student's own time. The project may be either (1) a commodity/deposit-based dissertation; (2) a specific deposit or mine-based dissertation; or (3) a research paper. The text should comprise no more than 25,000 words (including the space equivalent of diagrams and tables, but not references) and follow the standard format of a scientific thesis.
Assessment The dissertation is assessed by two examiners. Examiners are selected from UWA, other universities or from industry.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
