EART1105 Earth and Environment: Dynamic Planet [UG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 1
Old unit code 139.105
Outcomes Students are able to demonstrate an understanding of the Earth System at a global scale now and in the past; comprehend how this understanding can be applied to analysing environmental issues that affect us; demonstrate an understanding of the processes and forces that shape Earth's surface and result in continuous environmental changes; make interpretations and draw conclusions about Earth processes by integrating critical thinking, research and data analysis.
Content This unit emphasises the dynamic processes that shape the Earth's surface today, many of which have done so since the Earth was formed. Lectures are divided into three main themes, one for each of Earth's major physical components. Emphasis is placed on how these components are linked by examining different systems at both a global and local scale. As humans, an understanding of dynamic Earth processes provides a framework in which to evaluate contemporary environmental issues that affect our society, both regionally and globally, and influence the quality of our lives.
Assessment This comprises an individual exercise (5 per cent) that forms the basis for a group report (30 per cent), an individual presentation (10 per cent), a one-hour mid-semester theory examination (10 per cent) and a two-hour end-of-semester theory examination (45 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is available for those students who obtain a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in this unit (see University General Rule 1.2.1.25).
