Outcomes These depend on the specific project chosen, however the following skills are developed in all projects: the application of knowledge of basic science and engineering fundamentals; communication skills; in-depth technical competence in at least one aspect of engineering; and problem identification, formulation and solution.
Content This unit must be taken in successive semesters within a maximum of four semesters. Parts 1 to 4 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit. Students can commence the unit in either semester 1 or semester 2.

The unit provides training in the investigation of a particular topic and in the presentation of the results. Students are required to submit a technical report on a topic approved by the Head of the School of Civil and Resource Engineering and to participate in the prescribed seminars.
Assessment This is based on a progress report submitted during part 2, a seminar paper and a seminar given in part 4 and a final project report submitted at the end of part 4. These allow students to demonstrate verbal and oral communication skills, and, through the research project, problem identification, formulation and solution.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
