Unit details

CIVL7140 Civil Engineering Numerical Analysis [PG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 2
Outcomes Students gain knowledge of methods of numerical analysis used in a modern civil engineering context, and the skills to apply these methods to practical civil engineering problems.
Content The methods of analysis covered in this unit include finite difference methods, finite element methods, boundary element methods, meshless methods and scaled boundary methods. Implementation and application to various problems are covered, together with advanced topics such as error estimation and adaptivity. The unit includes comparative analysis of different methods and analysis of typical errors in their applications.
Assessment This comprises an examination and marked assignments which assess students' understanding of basic principles of civil engineering numerical analysis and their application to solving practical problems.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
