| Outcomes | Students develop the ability to analyse structural loads and structural systems and apply the results of these analyses to design both structural members and frames. | ||
| Content | This unit introduces students to the concepts of limit states design, with a particular emphasis on the loading codes AS1170.1, 1170.2, 1170.4 and on the steel design code AS4100. Particular design topics include (1) critical load combinations; (2) design of tension members; (3) design of compression members; (4) design of bending members; (5) combined tension/compression and bending; (6) design of welded and bolted connections; (7) fatigue loading; and (8) methods of analysis for steel-framed structures. | ||
| Assessment | Three mid-semester examinations are assessed as being representative of the problems assigned in weekly tutorials. Both mid-semester and final examinations combine aspects of problem recognition, risk identification, design solution methodology and proper documentation of calculations. Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete the course. | ||
