| Outcomes | Students are able to understand the role surveying and computer-aided design (CAD) play in civil engineering investigation, design and construction; are taught conventional survey instrumentation and field techniques and are introduced to CAD; and develop problem-solving and communication skills within a group environment. The unit focuses on theoretical concepts and the implementation of these concepts in technical applications. | ||
| Content | The major topics covered in this unit are levelling, introduction to electronic distance measurement, traversing, survey field practices, errors and their adjustment, the global positioning system (GPS) and an introduction to sketching and two-dimensional computer-aided drafting (CAD). | ||
| Assessment | This comprises a surveying component made up of a theory and a practical examination and a CAD component made up of weekly tutorials and a major assignment. Assessment for both components is weighted equally. Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete the course. | ||
