Unit details

CIVL1110 Engineering Structures [UG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 2 (see Timetable)
Old unit code 610.101, ENDP1110
Outcomes Students are exposed to the concept of structural design, from the conceptual stage through to the submission of final drawings; understand the importance of statics in the design process; and are introduced to the basic concepts of solid mechanics required for the establishment of safety and serviceability in structures.
Content This unit provides an introduction to the structural design process. This extends from the conceptual design stage through to the submission of final drawings. The importance of statics is highlighted and basic concepts of solid mechanics are explored. Stress, strength and stiffness are used to define structural forms and possible failure modes. Emphasis is placed on establishing designs which satisfy both safety and serviceability requirements. Project work is used to correlate calculations with engineering drawings and ultimately to construct useable structures. Students are also introduced to modern methods of structural analysis.
Assessment This consists of compulsory weekly assignments, a mid-semester test, a design project and a final examination. The weekly assignments and design project stimulate students to work continuously on the unit. The test and examination allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and problem-solving abilities in the design and analysis of simple engineering structures.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete the course.

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of going to press but may be subject to change.
  • Assistance with study skills, including English language skills, is available free of charge from Student Services for all enrolled students (see http://www.studentservices.uwa.edu.au/ss/learning). Student Services location: Second Floor, South Wing, Guild Village; telephone: 6488 2423.
  • Books and other materials wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary Reading', 'Recommended Reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult. For first-year units the Bookshop will endeavour to make available photocopies of book lists for individual units. Books marked with an asterisk (*) are available in paperback.
