Unit details

CHPR4530 Process Systems [UG, PG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 2 (see Timetable)
Old unit code 650.414, RESR4530
Outcomes Students develop an understanding of petroleum processing and production of associated natural gas liquids (NGLs) and LPG; the working principles and equipment involved in the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the world-wide LNG industry including production, transport and marketing issues; and the science, engineering and economics involved in the conversion of natural gas into methanol, other liquids and petrochemicals (GTLs). The unit also encompasses the design consideration for a hydrocarbon process facility.
Content Topics in this unit are drawn from the broader areas of natural gas and liquids processing including the production, transport and storage of petroleum products. The unit covers concepts in plant design and operations as well as safety systems and market implications on product quality. Topics for consideration include LPG and LNG production and transport, NGL production of methanol and higher alcohols, gasoline production and petrochemicals; and the economics of production and the comparison of offshore versus land-based facilities.
Assessment This comprises continuous assessment and an end-of-semester examination.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete the course.
