CHEM3308 Industrial Chemistry [UG]

ContentTopics include chemical potential, partial molar quantities, thermodynamics of mixing and the properties of solutions; application of thermodynamics to industrial processes; Gibbs phase rule; interpretation of phase diagrams for two and three component systems; Ellingham diagrams; predominance diagrams; pyrometallurgy, extraction processes, calcination, roasting; hydrometallurgy, leaching; electrowinning; thermodynamics and kinetics in aqueous solutions; Pourbaix diagrams; heterogenous reaction kinetics; physical principles of industrial chemistry with special emphasis on chemical processing in Western Australia; hydrocarbon refining; Bayer process for the production of alumina; production of synthetic rutile from mineral sands; and production of iron and steel, HBI, Hismelt.
 
AssessmentThis consists of an examination (60 per cent), mid-semester assessment (20 per cent) and laboratory work (20 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
