CHEM1105 Introductory Chemistry [UG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 1
Old unit code 510.105
Content This unit is designed for students with little or no background in chemistry who wish to gain an understanding of basic chemistry. Entry is restricted to students without a satisfactory pass in TEE Chemistry. In semester two, the natural follow-on unit is CHEM1106 Biological Chemistry. However, enrolment in CHEM1102 Organic Chemistry or CHEM1104 Biological Inorganic and Physical Chemistry is possible for students who have performed well (D, HD) in CHEM1105 Introductory Chemistry.

Topics covered include the structure of matter, chemical reactions, solvents and organic chemistry. In introducing the structure of matter and the chemical elements, an elementary discussion of atomic structure and the bonding of elements to form compounds is given. Further development requires a discussion of the mole concept. This leads to a study of chemical reactions, with discussions on oxidation and reduction, acids and bases, energy changes in reactions, reaction rates and chemical equilibrium. The subject of solvents concentrates on water and finally there is an introduction to organic chemistry.
Assessment This consists of an examination (50 per cent), WebCT-based ongoing assessment (25 per cent) and laboratory work (25 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is available for those students who obtain a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in this unit (see University General Rule 1.2.1.25).

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of going to press but may be subject to change.
  • Assistance with study skills, including English language skills, is available free of charge from Student Services for all enrolled students (see http://www.studentservices.uwa.edu.au/ss/learning). Student Services location: Second Floor, South Wing, Guild Village; telephone: 6488 2423.
  • Books and other materials wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary Reading', 'Recommended Reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult. For first-year units the Bookshop will endeavour to make available photocopies of book lists for individual units. Books marked with an asterisk (*) are available in paperback.
