Unit details

CHEM1104 Biological Inorganic and Physical Chemistry [UG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 2, offshore teaching period
Old unit code 510.104
Content This unit is of the same standard as CHEM1101 Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and is recommended principally for students who intend to major in the biological sciences. It also provides entry to Level 2 and 3 chemistry units and to a major in Chemistry. The unit is a natural follow-on from CHEM1103 Biological Organic Chemistry.

The unit deals with (1) principles of chemistry and their applications—atomic and molecular structure; states of matter and phase transitions; structure, properties and reactions of classes of substances; properties of solutions; colloids; oxidation-reduction reactions; electrochemistry; equilibrium; acids, bases and buffers; thermodynamics including enthalpy, entropy and free-energy changes of reactions; intermolecular forces; and kinetics and catalysis; and (2) chemistry of the elements, metal co-ordination compounds and oxidation states.
Assessment This comprises an end-of-semester examination (50 per cent), ongoing assessment (25 per cent) and laboratory work (25 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is available for those students who obtain a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in this unit (see University General Rule 1.2.1.25).
Unit Co-ordinator(s) Dr Emma Bartle

Unit Rules
Prerequisites: satisfactory performance (scaled score of 50 per cent or more) in TEE Chemistry or equivalent. Students with a raw score of less than 40 per cent must consult a Level 1 chemistry adviser.
Incompatibility: CHEM1101 Inorganic and Physical Chemistry
Contact hourslectures: 3 hrs per week; labs: 3 hrs per week (for 6 weeks) (unsatisfactory attendance and/or performance at the laboratory sessions leads to a laboratory mark of zero)
Unit web page http://webct.uwa.edu.au/ (only for enrolled students)
[Some unit web pages are still under construction and will be available in 2010.]
Note A partial requirement for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute is a substantial Level 1 study (normally 12 points) of all three branches of chemistry. This unit, with CHEM1103 Biological Organic Chemistry, constitutes such a study.

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of going to press but may be subject to change.
  • Assistance with study skills, including English language skills, is available free of charge from Student Services for all enrolled students (see http://www.studentservices.uwa.edu.au/ss/learning). Student Services location: Second Floor, South Wing, Guild Village; telephone: 6488 2423.
  • Books and other materials wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary Reading', 'Recommended Reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult. For first-year units the Bookshop will endeavour to make available photocopies of book lists for individual units. Books marked with an asterisk (*) are available in paperback.
