Unit details

CHEM1103 Biological Organic Chemistry [UG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 1, offshore teaching period
Old unit code 510.103
Content This unit is of the same standard as CHEM1102 Organic Chemistry and is recommended principally for students who intend to major in the biological sciences. However, the unit also provides entry to Level 2 and Level 3 chemistry units and to a major in Chemistry.

The first few weeks of the semester are spent revising and extending some of the basic concepts in chemistry (acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, atomic structure, bonding, stereochemistry, nomenclature). The remainder of the semester is devoted to organic chemistry, where the properties, preparation, reactions and uses of the various classes of organic compounds are discussed. A substantial emphasis is placed on biological molecules including proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids.
Assessment This comprises an examination (50 per cent), laboratory work (20 per cent) and a mid-semester examination (30 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is available for those students who obtain a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in this unit (see University General Rule 1.2.1.25).

Unit Rules
Prerequisites: satisfactory performance (scaled score of 50 per cent or more) in TEE Chemistry or equivalent. Students with a raw score of less than 40 per cent must consult a Level 1 chemistry adviser.
Incompatibility: CHEM1102 Organic Chemistry
Contact hourslectures: 3 hrs per week; labs: 3 hrs per week (for 6 weeks) (unsatisfactory attendance and/or performance at the laboratory sessions leads to a laboratory mark of zero)
Note A partial requirement for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute is a substantial Level 1 study (normally 12 points) of all three branches of chemistry. This unit, with CHEM1104 Biological Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, constitutes such a study.

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of going to press but may be subject to change.
  • Assistance with study skills, including English language skills, is available free of charge from Student Services for all enrolled students (see http://www.studentservices.uwa.edu.au/ss/learning). Student Services location: Second Floor, South Wing, Guild Village; telephone: 6488 2423.
  • Books and other materials wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary Reading', 'Recommended Reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult.
