Unit details

CHEM1102 Organic Chemistry [UG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 2
Old unit code 510.102
Content This unit is primarily for science students who intend to major in Chemistry or proceed with Level 2 chemistry major units and is a natural follow-on from CHEM1101 Inorganic and Physical Chemistry.

The unit explores the synthesis, reactions, uses and properties of the various classes of organic compounds and co-ordination compounds. Underlying concepts such as bonding, mechanism, stereochemistry, acid-base chemistry, equillibrium, kinetics and thermodynamics are revised and developed as required. Spectroscopic analysis and laboratory exercises give an insight into the everyday practice of organic chemistry.
Assessment This comprises an examination (50 per cent), continuing assessment (25 per cent) and laboratory work (25 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is available for those students who obtain a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in this unit (see University General Rule 1.2.1.25).
Unit Co-ordinator(s) Dr Scott Stewart
Location UWA (Crawley)
Mode on-campus
Unit Rules
Prerequisites: satisfactory performance (scaled score of 50 per cent or more) in TEE Chemistry or equivalent. Students with a raw score of less than 40 per cent must consult a Level 1 chemistry adviser.
Incompatibility: CHEM1103 Biological Organic Chemistry
Contact hourslectures: 3 hrs per week; labs: 3 hrs per week (for 9 weeks)
Note A partial requirement for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute is a substantial Level 1 study (normally 12 points) of all three branches of chemistry. This unit, with CHEM1101 Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, constitutes such a study.

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of going to press but may be subject to change.
  • Assistance with study skills, including English language skills, is available free of charge from Student Services for all enrolled students (see http://www.studentservices.uwa.edu.au/ss/learning). Student Services location: Second Floor, South Wing, Guild Village; telephone: 6488 2423.
  • Books and other materials wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary Reading', 'Recommended Reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult.
