Unit details

CHEM1101 Inorganic and Physical Chemistry [UG]

Credit 6 points
Availability Semester 1
Old unit code 510.101
Content This unit is primarily for science students who intend to major in Chemistry or proceed with Level 2 chemistry major units. During the semester the integrated laboratory/lecture program is concerned with physical and inorganic chemistry. Content includes atomic structure and periodic trends of properties; models of bonding; solubility and acid–base equilibria in aqueous solution; electrochemistry; thermodynamics of reactions; phase equilibria in one- and two-component systems; properties of solutions; structures of molecules and crystals; chemistry of main block and first row transition elements; and co-ordination chemistry.
Assessment This comprises a final examination (50 per cent), mid-semester examination (25 per cent) and laboratory work (25 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is available for those students who obtain a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in this unit (see University General Rule 1.2.1.25).
Location UWA (Crawley)
Mode on-campus
Unit Rules
Prerequisites: satisfactory performance (scaled score of 50 per cent or more) in TEE Chemistry or equivalent. Students with a raw score of less than 40 per cent must consult a Level 1 chemistry adviser.
Incompatibility: CHEM1104 Biological Inorganic and Physical Chemistry
Contact hourslectures: 3 hrs per week; labs: 3 hrs per week (for 9 weeks) (unsatisfactory attendance and/or performance at the laboratory sessions leads to a laboratory mark of zero)
Note A partial requirement for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute is a substantial Level 1 study (normally 12 points) of all three branches of chemistry. This unit, with CHEM1102 Organic Chemistry, constitutes such a study.

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of going to press but may be subject to change.
  • Assistance with study skills, including English language skills, is available free of charge from Student Services for all enrolled students (see http://www.studentservices.uwa.edu.au/ss/learning). Student Services location: Second Floor, South Wing, Guild Village; telephone: 6488 2423.
  • Books and other materials wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary Reading', 'Recommended Reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult.
