Outcomes Students develop familiarity with all aspects of maritime archaeological surveying; develop familiarity with all aspects of on-site conservation techniques; are able to apply the skills learned in semester one to recording a wide range of sites; are expected to use the following equipment and programs in their survey work—total station, side-scan sonar, PhotoModeler, Site Surveyor, three-dimensional photogrammetry, Rhino, GPS, ArcView and ArcMap, GIS, ROVs, CAD, triangulation, trilateration, three-dimensional recording; and are able to work independently as well as co-operatively.
Content In this unit students conduct a series of supervised practical operations involving surveying maritime archaeological sites. This involves the construction of a GIS including side-scan sonar mosaic, magnetic survey data, historical plans, photographic imagery including aerial and chart images, and information from databases. In addition, students examine wreck inspection reports and reporting processes under the various legislative frameworks.
Assessment This comprises a wreck inspection report (30 per cent), GIS project (30 per cent) and group report (40 per cent).
