Outcomes Students are able to identify artefacts and understand the current issues relating to recording classification and cataloguing; access and understand the current international literature relating to artefacts and their classification; record artefacts using drawing, photographic (digital and standard camera) and scanning techniques and digitally manipulate images; understand the principles of orthographic projection; produce three-dimensional images of complex objects; prepare images for publication in both printed and virtual media; understand the principles of recording a ship's lines; be familiar with conducting research on collections; and, through working on the Department of Maritime Archaeology collection, understand the importance of the publication and dissemination of information, exhibition and public access. Students are able to apply the techniques learned in this unit to their practical units.
Content This unit introduces students to the kinds of artefacts encountered in maritime archaeology, in particular, the construction and components of ships and their methods of propulsion. The management of these artefacts including the associated museology are discussed. Students demonstrate their applied understanding of these topics through tutorial discussion, an essay and an examination.
Assessment This includes an examination (40 per cent), an essay (40 per cent) and tutorial presentation (20 per cent).
