Old unit code 160.222
Outcomes Students are able to demonstrate their understanding of the main issues, evidence and sites in archaeological studies of the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods in Europe; show literary and analytical research skills by organising the results of independent research; develop and demonstrate presentation skills by preparing a tutorial presentation; demonstrate critical reading skills; develop communication skills in group discussions; and improve and build on written skills and academic argument.
Content This unit studies the course of European prehistory from the appearance of recognisable human ancestors to the development of agriculture and early farming communities. It covers the period conventionally known as 'The Stone Age', when people in Europe relied on stone artefacts before the development of metal technologies. It looks at variation in technology and hunter-gatherer adaptive strategies in the Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age) and Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) periods and considers the transition to farming in the Neolithic (New Stone Age). Students also learn of the problems associated with understanding human evolution in its cultural context, with particular reference to the relationships between Homo erectus, 'pre-sapiens' forms, Neanderthal and anatomically modern humans.
Assessment This comprises a major essay (40 per cent), an examination (30 per cent), a tutorial presentation (20 per cent) and tutorial attendance and participation (10 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
