| Outcomes | Students understand the anatomy of the limbs as the basis of joint movement and function; the comparison between the limbs as the basis for the different functional requirements in humans; the regional anatomy of the head and neck and the anatomical, developmental and evolutionary principles it illustrates. | ||
| Content | This unit offers a regional study of the entire upper and lower limbs, describing joints and joint movements, muscle groups and patterns of innervation. It draws attention to specialised functions of the limbs such as hand mechanisms and locomotion. Topics of interest like nerve injuries relate the basic structure to altered function. This is followed by the study of the anatomical organisation of the head and neck. In addition to the topographic organisation of this region, attention is paid to functional areas like mastication, swallowing and the eye, along with embryonic development and its correlation. | ||
| Assessment | This comprises continuous assessment in the form of vivas, tutorials and in-class written tests (35 per cent), a laboratory examination in the form of 'spot' questions (25 per cent), and an end-of-semester written examination comprising short-answer and multiple-choice questions (40 per cent). Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. | ||
